How much is this ‘New’ Land Rover Defender worth?
A 2016 Land Rover Defender 90 Autobiography is up for sale at RM Sotheby’s with just 43 miles on the clock. But what’s it worth?
There’s been plenty of complaints that the recently revealed new Land Rover Defender has betrayed its roots and turned in to yet another Chelsea Tractor for the well-heeled to scoot around on the school run, safe in the knowledge they’re invincible kings of the road. With prices starting at around £40k and, as we discovered, pushing in to six figures if you tick a few options, the moan is that the Defender is out of the reach of those who want it to work for its living.
But before we get too hung-up on Land Rover’s ‘new’ direction for the Defender, perhaps we should stop and consider just how expensive the old Defender could be.
Even if you ignore Defender ‘Specials’ from car titivators, Land Rover themselves were not exactly immune from the temptation to cash-in on the Defender’s popularity, particularly in the hype surround its planned demise.
Back in 2015, Land Rover revealed the Land Rover Defender Autobiography, a Defender with all the Land Rover bells and whistles, and more, thrown at it, from two-tone metallic paint job to an interior swathed in two-tone leather. And it cost £61k.
Clearly, even at £61k, someone thought buying one and keeping it as new was a sound investment, so, if you feel so inclined, you can now snap up this 2016 Land Rover Defender Autobiography from RM Sotheby’s October sale. And, as it’s done just 43 miles from new, you can consider it perhaps the last new ‘old’ Defender.
But how much is it worth? Clearly the owner thinks it will have appreciated in value, but RM Sotheby’s don’t seem inclined to stick their corporate neck out and give it an estimate.
So, more than the original £61k, or a lesson learnt?

New one is beautiful, competant… and comfortable, the last of which the old will never be.
