Hyundai Nexo Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car demonstrates AUTONOMOUS capability
The Hyundai Nexo – Hyundai’s new hydrogen fuel cell electric car – has demonstrated its Level 4 autonomous capabilities on a 118 mile road trip from Seoul to Pyeongchang.
It’s less than a month since the new Hyundai Nexo was revealed as Hyundai’s replacement for the ix35 FCEV, and Hyundai are already busy demonstrating what it can do.In a world first for a hydrogen fuel cell electric car, a fleet of the new Nexos have taken a road trip from Seoul to Pyeongchang, a total of 118 miles, with Level 4 Autonomous gubbins controlling the Nexos from start to finish.
All it took was a press of the ‘SET’ and ‘CRUISE’ buttons at the start of the journey, and the Nexo set off, joining the natural flow of traffic, changing lanes, overtaking, negotiating toll gates and even through tunnels where the GPS signal was interrupted.
The self-driving Nexos look much the same as the regular Nexo, but they do have extra cameras and LIDAR to ensure they have full level 4 autonomy.
It’s a demonstration of what’s to come, with Hyundai planning to have Level 4 autonomy on offer in Smart Cities by 2021, and full autonomous capabilities everywhere by 2030.
And the demonstration underscores Hyundai’s assertion that an FCEV is far better able to deliver autonomous driving, as its fuel cell delivers real EV range and enough power to run the plethora of electronics needed to drive autonomously.
