The Lamborghini Urus – Lamborghini’s first SUV in a generation – will be built at VW’s plant in Bratislava alongside other VW Group SUVs.
It could be argued that the appeal of Lamborghini stems from its ‘Italian-ness’, but it seems ‘Made in Italy’ is not an honour Lamborghini are going to bestow on their new Urus SUV.
Autonews is reporting that VW are planning to build the Urus alongside the Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q7, VW Touareg and the bodies for the new Bentley SUV (they were planning to build the Bentley SUV in full in Bratislava too, but now it will be just the body to make sure the Bentley SUV is ‘British’).
To get ready for the big expansion in SUV models across the VW Group, VW is busy increasing capacity in Bratislava with the group’s biggest metal press being installed, which can churn out both steel and aluminium body panels, an important consideration as weight saving and economy restrictions make reinforced aluminium a winner going forward.
Production of the Lamborghini Urus SUV is due to start in 2017 with a sporty structure based on VW’s MLB platform and (probably) a twin-turbo V8 delivering around 600bhp derived from the twin-turbo 4.0 litre V8 used by Bentley and Audi, but with Lamborghini fettling.

How many potential buyers would be happy, knowing that their expensive Lamboghini SUV is going down the same line as a Q7, Touareg and Cayenne?
Bentley is lucky, that their new SUV is not suffering the same fate.
It would be interesting to see what Lotus could do with the Range Rover Sport platform. Can you imagine the performance of this SUV with Lotus’s new 600bhp V8 engine?
