Max Verstappen WINS Austrian Grand Prix for Red Bull

Max Verstappen has won the Austrian Grand Prix in a thrilling race which saw hime take the lead two laps from the end. Leclerc’s Ferrari was second.

Charles Leclerc may have had pole position for the 2019 Austrian Grand Prix, and look like the likely victor for most of the race, but it was Max Verstappen who grabbed victory.

Leclerc looked in control of the race after a cracking star, whilst Verstappen managed to drop from second on the grid to seventh, but Verstappen pitted later than Leclerc, rejoined in fourth and fought up to second and, with two laps to go, dived up the inside of Leclerc, running Leclerc off the road in the process, to take the win.

It looked for a while as if the stewards may penalise Verstappen for the move, but they didn’t and the win stands, as does Leclerc’s second.

Behind the top two it was the Mercedes of Bottas ahead of Vettel’s Ferrari, with Lewis Hamilton only managing fifth place, followed by Norris in the McLaren in sixth , Gasly in the Red Bull in seventh, Sainz in the second McLaren in eighth and the Alfas of Raikkonen and Giovinazzi in ninth and tenth.

Not only was it a good day for Red Bull, a not great day for Ferrari and a poor day for Mercedes, it was also a great day for Honda.

Powering the Red Bull to the win after McLaren dumped them because they couldn’t get results must have brought a smile.
