Lexus are teasing a new 2016 RX SUV ahead of a debut in April at the 2015 New York Motor Show, which looks to have styling cues from the new NX.
The new Lexus NX – the compact Lexus SUV – has shown that Lexus can take their designs in a funky, if somewhat divisive, direction, and it looks like the new Lexus RX is heading in a similar direction.
Ahead of a debut at the 2015 New York Motor Show in April, Lexus has released a single teaser image (above) that shows us some of what’s on offer in the new RX.
We’ve titivated the image a bit to show more than Lexus intended, and it’s clear the new RX is going to have much more modern looks than the current RX, a car whose looks have evolved since it first arrived almost 20 years ago without exactly breaking new styling ground.
The new RX clearly gets a coupe roofline, has strong character lines running down the flanks – high up from the trailing edge of the front wing right to the back, and along the bottom of the doors – aggressively flared wheel arches with a squared-off profile and angular tail lights.
We don’t get to see the front and back, but we’re expecting a slightly toned-down take on the NX’s statement grill and upright back end.
The RX is an important car for Lexus – in many ways their most important car – and they won’t want to scare off their traditional buyers with a new RX that looks too ‘out there’, but they have to make it look more appealing and contemporary if they’re going to extend its appeal.
It’s a fine line to travel – we’ll know soon enough if they’ve achieved it.
