We had the reveal of the new Volvo Concept Estate this week ahead of its Geneva debut. And it does look impressive.
Yes, the interior does feature a chunk of concept stuff that will never make it in to production, but what it does have is Volvo’s new user interface and it does look very promising.
Featuring a tablet-sized portrait-shaped screen in the centre, the new interface manages to get rid of all but a handful of buttons as the vast majority of functions are transferred to the new screen.
That could be a real pain if the screen isn’t intuitive or responsive, but it does look like Volvo has it right with familiar actions like swipe and pinch working on their interface in just the same way they would on a Tablet or Smartphone.
The production reality of Volvo’s new interface will be the test, but if it works as well as it appears to, and the main thrust of Volvo’s new interior and exterior design comes through without too much watering down (we’ll find that out with the arrival of the 2015 Volvo XC90 in September), then Volvo look to be on a winner.
More on the Volvo Concept Estate from Geneva next week.
