Skoda Kamiq URBAN SUV teased
The new Skoda Kamiq Urban SUV is teased ahead of a debut at the Beijing Motor Show, aimed at younger Chinese buyers. No plans to bring the Kamiq to the UK or Europe.
Skoda has been on an SUV offensive lately as it taps in to the still extraordinary rise in demand for high-riding SUVs and Crossover, and now we get a new Skoda SUV – the Skoda Kamiq. But unlike the Karoq and Kodiaq, the Kamiq isn’t a new SUV for urban individuals to blat around cities in the UK and Europe; this Skoda SUV is planned as a new car for China only.
Although it seems to be the same sort of size as the Karoq, the Kamiq is being built to tempt younger Chinese buyers to grab a piece of Skoda rather than domestic competition, with prices expected to start from around £10k.
There’s certainly a strong family resemblance to the Karoq, and although the Kamiq will come with plenty of Skoda’s technology it will feature analogue dials and a modest 7″ infotainment and a 1.5 litre petrol engine with manual gearbox. Whether that will be enough to tempt younger Chinese buyers from domestic offerings with more obvious technology remains to be seen.
But China is a big market for Skoda (around a quarter of their sales are in China), and if the Kamiq hits the mark that will probably rise significantly.
The new Skoda Kamiq will debut at the Beijing Motor Show next week.
