Spanish Grand Prix Qualifying – Hamilton on pole
Lewis Hamilton has beaten Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg to pole in the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, and it’s a Red Bull row two.
It’s been a long time since reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton has won a Grand Prix (the USA GP last year), and the 2016 season has been pretty woeful for the Brit so far.But the Spanish Grand Prix may just see him start to fight his way back in to contention, with a convincing pole position for tomorrow’s race, beating championship leader and team mate, Nico Rosberg, in to second place by 0.3 seconds despite Rosberg being quicker for most of the weekend.
Behind the Mercedes front row, Daniel Riciardo managed to fend off his latest team mate (Max Verstappen, after Danill Kvyat was demoted to Toro Rosso), but Verstappen still managed fourth for an all Red Bull second row.
Row three is an all Ferrari affair, with Kimi Raikkonen in fifth and Sebastian Vettel in sixth, Bottas takes seventh place on the grid for Williams, Perez eighth for Toro Rosso, Alonso an impressive ninth for McLaren and Sainz 10th for Toro Rosso, beating his new team mate, Kvyat, who will start in 13th.
Felipe Massa was an early casualty for Williams, failing to get in a second lap in Q1 and starting 18th, and Jenson Button failed to emulate Alonso’s top ten grid slot and will start in 12th.
