As we saw back at Geneva earlier this year, Spyker has stretched and sorted the Spyker C8 to make the Spyker Aileron. And why is that important to Spyker? Simple. Big American bums (‘bums’ in the English sense, not the American!). Americans didn’t fit in to the elegant – but dinky – Spyker C8. So if Spyker where going to crack the American market in any sort of numbers they needed a bigger car, but without compromising the C8. And they seemed to have managed it with the Spyker Aileron.
So it’s entirely fitting that Spyker should bring along the Spyker C8 Aileron Spyder to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance event this weekend, to show off what they have to offer. After all, with the target being 50% of Spykers going to the States in future, this is the single most important market for Spyker.
Spyker has a big advantage with the C8 Aileron Spyder. The C8 Aileron was designed from the outset to be a convertible, so in essence the C8 Aileron Coupe is in fact a Spyder with a roof. So there are no design compromises or weight penalties to produce the Aileron Spyder.
So it’s no surprise that the chassis carries over unchanged to the Spyder from the Coupe, as does the engine – an Audi sourced 4.2 litre delivering 400bhp and 354lb/ft of torque. The Aileron Spyder can manage the 0-60 sprint in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 187mph. Standard transmission is a six-speed manual or – for the first time, and probably in deference to our Colonial Cousins’ aversion to using their left foot – an auto ‘box with paddle-shifters.
The interior is the usual glorious and quirky Spyker-fest of quilted leather and turned aluminium, but Spyker has also teamed up with Audio specialists Kharma to insert a very high-end infotainment centre. You also get a set of lovely 19″ Aeroblade wheels, which hide the massive AP brakes.
A glorious – if off-the-wall- creation from Spyker which will – hopefully – get the Americans on-side. Sales of the Spyker C8 Aileron Spyder are expected to start before the end of the year.
