2020 Toyota Yaris
The all-new Toyota Yaris is revealed with a new platform, new interior, new looks and new powertrains, but it’ll be September 2020 before you can take delivery in the UK.
The current Toyota Yaris is a decent car, very competent and able, if a little bland, and despite Toyota’s updates to the Yaris over the years it’s now getting rather behind the curve. But help is at hand to boost Toyota’s supermini sales with this all-new Toyota Yaris, complete with new looks, new platform and new powertrains but, rather surprisingly, Toyota don’t expect it to arrive with UK customers for almost a year.
We can’t see that new doing much for sales of the current Yaris – although there could be some interesting run-out editions at bargain prices as a result – because this new Yaris does look to be a big step forward.
Toyota say the new Yaris is “Condensed and Agile”, with a roofline 40mm lower than the current model, an increase in width of 50mm (and a 60mm wider track) and an extra 50mm in the wheelbase, despite which the new Yaris is actually 5mm shorter than the current model.
Inside it’s fairly minimalist, but Toyota say the materials are higher quality – including a felt trim finish in places – soft-touch instrument panel, central Toyota Touch touchscreen, TFT multi-info display and 10″ HUD, with lower dashboard, wider and higher centre console and smaller steering wheel.
Under the bonnet is a choice of three-pot engines, with a 1.0 litre with five-speed manual sitting at the entry level and a 1.5 litre with six-speed manual or CVT and a 1.5 litre hybrid which adds an electric motor to the mix.
With a year to go before the new Yaris arrives in the UK, expect Toyota to get a bit more specific with details and come up with prices in the coming months.
