Nissan has opened a new Nismo HQ in Yokohama and confirmed that there will be a Nissan GT-R Nismo flagship performance car built.
We learnt late in 2011 that Nissan are planning to produce a whole rang of Nismo performance models across their range as they seek to add a bit of glamour and sportiness in to their range of sometimes dull cars.
So far, we’ve had the Nissan Juke Nismo arrive and the Nissan 370Z Nismo turned up recently too as a production model for the UK and Europe – and we’ve even had a concept of a LEAF Nismo – so we know Nissan are serious about offering Nismo versions even on their least sporty models.
But the one car that really doesn’t need a Nismo version is the GT-R, yet to have a range of performance cars under the Nismo banner without having the mighty GT-R at the top of that range would seem odd. So Nissan are obliging.
At the opening of the new Nismo HQ in Yokohama, Japan, Nissan boss, Carlos Ghosn, confirmed that a GT-R Nismo is on the way for 2014. He said:
It would be unthinkable for us to develop a range of Nismo road cars without including the GT-R. The standard road car is a global supercar and the GT-R’s performance on track reflects the passion and talents of the Nismo team. The GT-R Nismo will be special and I can’t wait to drive it.
Nissan hasn’t revealed any specifications for the GT-R Nismo, but it will be based on the latest 2013 GT-R (pictured above) and be an extra model sitting at the top of the GT-R range.
With performance of 0-62mph in a scant 3 seconds and a top speed of 196mph, the 2013 Nissan GT-R is no slouch, so where exactly Nissan goes with a Nismo version remains to be seen. Perhaps they’ll be able to dial in a bit more ‘joy’ and a bit less ‘computer’ to make the GT-R Nismo a real driver’s car?
But whatever Nissan do to create the GT-R Nismo, you can be sure it’ll have epic performance, even if it’ll probably end up costing up to £100k.
