VW Golf R leaks ahead of Frankfurt

The 2010 VW Golf R with 265bhp and 4Motion

The 2010 Volkswagen Golf R has leaked out ahead of Frankfurt. It features the same 265bhp engine as the Scirocco R plus 4WD.

We’ve praised the VW Scirocco R as a great alternative to the Focus RS. It’s almost as quick but it’s wrapped up in a prettier package. But the Scirocco will always play second fiddle to its hatchback sibling – the VW Golf – so we’ve been waiting to see what VW will offer up for th Golf R. Well, the wait is over as the VW Golf R has leaked out of VW ahead of its Frankfurt launch.

It won’t surprise you to learn that VW has dropped the heavy and thirsty (though quick) 3.2 litre V6 in the last hot Golf in favour of the 2.0 litre turbo found in the Scirocco. This engine deliver 265 bhp and should give the Golf R a 0-60mph of around 6.3 seconds – or less with the DSG ‘box.

The Golf R will also get VW’s 4Motion all wheel drive to add to the mix, and a raft of styling changes. These include LED daytime running lights, twin tailpipes, the ubiquitous ‘R’ logos and a new set of alloys. You will also get a host of ‘R’ badging in the two-tone interior, together with aluminium pedals and a flat-bottomed steering wheel.

We don’t have any pricing or big detail yet – but soon.
