Range Rover Velar is the latest Land Rover to get JLR’s new 300 PS petrol engine

Land Rover’s new Range Rover Velar is the latest Land Rover to get the option of JLR’s most powerful 2.0 litre Ingenium petrol engine, here with 300 PS.

When the new Range Rover Velar was revealed earlier this year, it came with JLR’s 2.0 litre Ingenium engines – petrol and diesel – as an option, together with the 3.0 litre V6 Supercharged petrol.

But the petrol Ingenium engine on offer for the early buyers was limited to just the lower powered 247bhp, but Land Rover has now decided to roll out the more powerful 296bhp version to the Velar too as the new engine makes its mark on the LR range.

We’ve already seen this engine arrive for the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque, but there it gets 290 PS (286bhp in old money), whereas the Velar gets a bit more go with 296bhp.

That means the Velar gets the same engine as Jaguar have put in the F-Pace, XF and XE, and it looks an appealing balance of power and economy for the road-focussed Velar, with 0-60mph in 5.7 seconds and official economy of 36.2mpg.

The price for the 300 PS petrol Velar is a bit of a jump from the entry-level’s £44,380, with the new engine adding a chunky £10k to the price, but on the Velar R-Dynamic it’s more like £5k extra.
