Mercedes is planning to launch new MULTIBEAM headlights with 84 LEDs per headlight unit for even greater control and increased levels of illumination.

Mercedes has fallen in love with LEDs in their cars in recent years, with the new Mercedes S-Class getting around 500 LEDs throughout the car, and the latest CLS getting MULTIBEAM lights with 24 LEDs per unit.
Mercedes reckon that there are five times more fatalities on country roads at night than in the day, and that there are twice as many night-time accidents on those country roads as on better-lit roads.
Better illumination is therefore essential to safety, but it needs to be better illumination that doesn’t cause additional hazards by blinding oncoming traffic.
That’s where the new MULTIBEAM lights in the CLS come in; each of the 24 LEDs in each headlight can be controlled individually and adapt to traffic conditions, allowing illumination to be the best possible in nany given circumstance.
Now, Mercedes are taking that technology to another level with a new MULTIBEAM headlights featuring 84 LEDs each for even greater resolution of the light output, affording other road users even better protection from dazzle and improving the illumination of the road ahead. All this without any moving parts.
Uwe Kostanzer, head of light systems at Mercedes, said:
Enabling ideal visibility in all driving situations without dazzling other road users has always been our credo in developing new light systems.
We are pursuing the further development of LED technology to this end.
Mercedes hasn’t yet revealed which of its models are going to get the new 84 LED light system, or when, but put your money on the S-Class being the first.
