Volvo XC40 is Volvo’s best-selling car in the UK
Volvo sales continue to grow in the UK, with September 2019 sales up by 18 per cent and the Volvo XC40 and XC60 leading the way.
All the Volvo news of late has been about the growing electrification of Volvo’s models, from the XC90 B5 to the newly-launched XC40 T5 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid and, of course, the impending arrival of the new electric XC40.Those models – and more electrified Volvos to come – will certainly do Volvo’s sales no harm at all, but they hardly need it; in a tough market Volvo’s sales in the UK have risen by 18 per cent in the past year, and by 21 per cent in the first nine months of this year.
Leading Volvo’s sales in the UK is the very good XC40, and with the arrival of the XC40 plug-in hybrid last month and the electric XC40 going on sale soon, the XC40’s sales look set to continue their impressive growth. But that’s no surprise; the XC40 is probably the most rounded choice in its sector. And sales of the XC60 aren’t far behind either.
Kristian Elvefors, Volvo’s UK MD, said:
It is very rewarding to see how our revitalised product line-up is continuing to strike such a chord with British car buyers. Great products and the unstinting efforts of everyone in our retail network and UK team are delivering excellent results, but we take nothing for granted in a fiercely competitive marketplace.
This is why it is important to keep a spirit of innovation, both in our products and the way we do business, including a real focus on the customer.
But it’s not just the UK where Volvo’s sales are growing, with sales globally up by 7.4 per cent so far in 2019 at more than half a million, and market share growing too.

As a Jaguar lover and brand loyalist, l can only say that this is where Jaguar should be. Why Volvo and not Jaguar? They (the Swedes with Geely) took a humdrum line and not only made it good looking, but electronically fantastic and new age. Jaguars are the most gorgeous cars in the planet, but always a step behind infotainment/electronic-wise. Who would have thought you could drive upmarket and make Volvo luxury and get people to pay for it? Almost makes me crazy.
